Through seeking grants and targeted fundraising efforts CTPF strives to safeguard the Theatre\u2019s architectural integrity, promote its rich history, importance to all in the LGBTQ+ communities, and to ensure the Theatre\u2019s continued role as a community hub for cinema, arts, cultural events, and job creation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"HISTORY\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#ddd\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-spacer gb-block-spacer gb-divider-solid gb-divider-size-1\"><hr style=\"height:30px\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#ddd\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-spacer gb-block-spacer gb-divider-solid gb-divider-size-1\"><hr style=\"height:30px\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#ddd\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-spacer gb-block-spacer gb-divider-solid gb-divider-size-1\"><hr style=\"height:30px\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>History of the Theatre<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>June 22, 1922 \u2013 The Castro Theatre first opened doors thanks to the Nasser brothers, one of the oldest families involved in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the San Francisco film industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1930s \u2013 the renowned neon \u201cCASTRO\u201d sign and other decorative upgrades were made.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1967 \u2013 the Castro was named San Francisco Historical Landmark N0. 100 and began supplementing first-run<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>presentations, foreign films, and festivals, with LGBTQ+ programming, notably:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1980s \u2013 the Castro hosted opening night of the SF Lesbian\/Gay Film Festival and the world premiere of \u201cBuddies\u201d, the first movie discussing the AIDS crisis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the early 2000s \u2013 the fa\u00e7ade of the theater was restored to be depicted in the film \u201dMilk, \u201d a movie about CA\u2019s first openly gay elected official.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the 2010s \u2013 the Castro brought together on-stage contestants from RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and hosted the funeral of Gilbert Baker, the creator of the rainbow pride flag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2020, the Castro shut down due to COVID-19<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2022, the Castro Theatre reopened under the management of local concert promoter, Another Planet Entertainment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2024, Another Planet Entertainment began the 41 million dollar historic restoration and renovation project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In February 2026, The Castro re-opened their doors to the public.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ABOUT\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#ddd\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-spacer gb-block-spacer gb-divider-solid gb-divider-size-1\"><hr style=\"height:30px\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#ddd\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-spacer gb-block-spacer gb-divider-solid gb-divider-size-1\"><hr style=\"height:30px\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"color:#ddd\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-spacer gb-block-spacer gb-divider-solid gb-divider-size-1\"><hr style=\"height:30px\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"ABOUT\">ABOUT THE PRESERVATION FOUNDATION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Film:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Cinema will remain at the heart of the Castro Theatre. Keeping film as an integral component of the theatre\u2019s programming is one of Castro Theatre Preservation Foundation\u2019s (CTPF) missions. This includes ensuring that the Theatre continues be a home for a wide range of film festivals such as, but not limited to, Frameline, one of the largest LGBTQ+ performing arts organizations, who the Jewish Film Festival, Arab Film Festival, Cinema Italia, Third I South Asian Independent Film Festival, Berlin and Beyond,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and the Silent Film Festival. As part of this mission, CTPF is working to support the multi-million dollar investment in film infrastructure, such as a mechanical tiered raked floor system providing enhanced sightlines, 7.1 surround-sound cinema audio system, and a new state-of-the-art movie screen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>LGBTQ+ Community:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CTPF is focused on continuing the legacy of the Theatre\u2019s programming, including the Theatre\u2019s ability to host a series of varying and diverse events\u2014especially those that uplift LGBTQ+ programming in an affirming and positive manner that honors the Castro community, such as the Annual Holiday Gay Men\u2019s Chorus performance, PRIDE activities, and Harvey Milk Day. CTPF plans to work with other non-profit organizations to establish a grants program to subsidize performing LBGTQ+ artists, filmmakers, and local community groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Organ:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a new customized organ has been designed and built by the Castro Organ Devotees Association (CODA) at a cost of approximately $1 million. One of CTFP\u2019s missions is to ensure that the Theatre has the proper infrastructure to support the new organ for generations to come. Investment Group, Inc (CCIG). For the past 34 years he has served as a developer and a development consultant on numerous projects representing hundreds of millions of dollars of rehabilitation and new construction. Several projects have required multiple finance sources including the use of tax credits and grants. As a Bay Area native and first generation Dutch-American, she brings to the CTPF a deep appreciation for diverse cultural and creative expression, and how they unite our communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">PAUL SULLAM&nbsp;<br>Paul Sullam is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of California, specializing in infectious diseases. Prior to his retirement in 2022, he was both clinically active at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and in basic science research, publishing over 100 scholarly articles. He has a life-long interest in films, and regularly attends events such as Cinema Italia and the SF Silent Film Festival.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">DAVID PERRY<br>David Perry is the founder\/CEO of David Perry &amp; Associates, Inc. a full service Marketing\/PR, Web &amp; Graphic Design, AI Strategies &amp; Training, Social Engagement &amp; Video, Crisis Communications, Government Affairs firm with international reach based in San Francisco &amp; Palm Springs. Perry is recipient of the \u201cExceptional Business Award\u201d from the SF Business Arts Council. He currently works as Vice President of Business Affairs for Another Planet Entertainment. Over the last 4 years Dan has worked closely with the Nasser Family, the original owners of the Castro Theatre, to develop a long-term plan to continue the legacy of the Theatre and its preservation. That plan includes the Theatre\u2019s restoration, which is currently underway. Dan\u2019s role on the Board of Directors of the Castro Theatre Preservation Foundation, is to provide a voice on behalf of the Theatre\u2019s operator, and from the perspective of a longtime resident of San Francisco, raising a young daughter.
